Macau visitor numbers rose by almost a quarter in 2024

The city saw a strong rise in the number of international visitors, but numbers remain below 2019 levels.

Macau.- The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) has reported that 34,928,650 people visited Macau in 2024. The figure was up 23.8 per cent in year-on-year terms but remains below 2019 levels.

Same-day visitors (18,884,882) rose by 35 per cent year-on-year and overnight visitors (16,043,768) by 12.8 per cent. The average length of stay was shortened by 0.1 day year-on-year to 1.2 days, with that of overnight visitors remaining unchanged to 2.3 days.

Mainland Chinese tourists accounted for the majority of arrivals at 24,491,424, up 28.6 per cent year-on-year. Those travelling under the Individual Visit Scheme (12,281,055) grew by 15.5 per cent in year-on-year terms. Visitors from the nine Pearl River Delta cities in the Greater Bay Area were up by 28.8 per cent year-on-year to 11,985,383.

Visitors from Taiwan reached 834,411, up 64.1 per cent year-on-year, while the number of tourists from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (Hong Kong SAR; 7,179,722) decreased by 0.2 per cent. International visitor arrivals rose by 66 per cent year-on-year to 2,423,093.

In terms of Southeast Asian markets, the number of visitors from the Philippines (493,399), Indonesia (183,062) and Malaysia (181,941) increased by 57.1 per cent, 28.1 per cent and 82.2 per cent year-on-year, respectively, while visitors from Thailand (134,658) and Singapore (119,201) saw a rise of 31.8 per cent and 29.8 per cent.

In South Asian markets, visitor numbers from India (103,817) grew by 76.5 per cent year-on-year. For Northeast Asian markets, visitors from the Republic of Korea (492,184) and Japan (126,424) increased by 140.6 per cent and 68.2 per cent year-on-year. Elsewhere, the number of visitors from the USA (147,941) was up 57.7 per cent.

Some 27,769,490 visitors arrived by land, accounting for 79.5 per cent of all visitors and rising by 24.1 per cent year-on-year. Meanwhile, 4,094,585 visitors arrived by sea, an increase of 10.7 per cent year-on-year. 3,064,575 people arrived by air, up by 43.9 per cent.

In December, Macau received 3,040,337 tourists. The figure was up 3.3 per cent in year-on-year terms. Same-day visitors (1,712,682) rose by 15.3 per cent year-on-year while overnight visitors (1,327,655) dropped by 8.9 per cent. The average length of stay fell by 0.1 days to 1.1 days. The duration for same-day visitors (0.2 day) remained unchanged while that for overnight visitors (2.3 days) rose by 0.1 day. The number of international visitors reached 292,202, up 22.5 per cent when compared to the previous year.
