Macau gives up tourist tax plans
Due to the negative impact the pandemic has had on the city and its gaming and tourism industries, the tax has been abandoned.
Macau.- Macau authorities will not implement a tourist tax, which had been in consideration before the Covid-19 pandemic.
Due to the negative impact the pandemic has had on the city and its gaming and tourism industries, the tax has been abandoned.
The Macau government has now stated a need to support the recovery of the tourism industry through measures such as tax reduction and economic support.
That is according to the Director of the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, who has said that an MGTO study found that “regulating the increase in visitor numbers by levying a tourist tax may not be the most effective measure applicable to Macau.”
The study also noted that many popular tourist cities around the world had opted instead to “promote the dispersal of visitors within the city and beyond” and focus on “improving urban infrastructure and facilities.”
