Greyhound Racing NSW has confirmed that racing will return to Lithgow in November following a multi-million-dollar redevelopment.

Australia.- Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) has announced that the redeveloped Lithgow greyhound racetrack will open on to the public on November 2. The first race meeting after the venue’s multi-million-dollar upgrade will be a twilight race card. Trial events are scheduled for October.

GRNSW said the majority of track works have already been completed. Patron amenities, buildings and the grandstand are expected to be finished in August, along with the installation of track lighting and the modular judge’s tower. All construction work is expected to be finalised by the end of September.

The redevelopment includes a rebuild of the racetrack, including the installation of a SafeChase rail and lure system, refurbished kennel blocks and public amenities, and broadcast-standard lighting averaging 900 lux. The track has been widened with a radii of 52.7 metres and a 620-metre starting point. Enhancement works are also being carried out at the venue’s main entrance.

Steve Griffin, GRNSW’s chief executive officer, said: “You are always a little hesitant to put a finish date on track works and track upgrades and set an official opening date as Mother Nature so frequently intervenes, but we are confident that the Lithgow track will be ready to go,” he said.

Griffin said the reopening would provide significant benefits for industry participants, particularly those in regional New South Wales who have been without a local greyhound racing venue since the closure of Bathurst in November 2022.

“The imminent opening of the Lithgow facility is not only wonderful news for participants on the other side of the Blue Mountains and in the Central West who have been without a local track since Bathurst closed in November 2022, but this is great news for all participants offering a new safe, state-of-the-art facility which our industry can be proud of,” he said.

The upgrade project was announced by New South Wales minister for Gaming and Racing David Harris in December 2025, with construction starting in January this year. Harris is expected to open the facility.
