Authorities in Macau have said that people from mainland China who want to enter the city must show a negative Covid-19 test issued 48 hours before.

Macau.- As the number of new Covid-19 cases continues to rise in the neighbouring province of Guangdong, authorities in Macau have decided to strengthen measures from Friday.

According to the city’s Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre, from January 14, those who intend to enter the city by plane or ship must present a negative Covid-19 test 48 hours before entry.

Those who don’t hold Macau ID won’t be permitted to enter if they breach the rule.

Authorities also reported that from January 15, hotels, bars, restaurants, massage parlours, health clubs and other entertainment venues will post a QR code for visitors to scan before entry.

The QR code was conceived to help the city with track and tracing efforts in case of an outbreak of Covid-19 cases.

A week ago, Elsie Ao Ieong U, Macau’s Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, announced authorities are analysing the possibility of requiring proof of Covid-19 vaccination or a negative Covid-19 nucleic acid test result for admission to indoor venues.

Ho Iat Seng, Macau’s chief executive, said that once the city achieves an 80 per cent vaccination rate, it will be easier to negotiate a travel bubble with other regions.
