Chinese lottery sales rise nearly 20% in May

Record growth was driven by sports events and a low base in 2024.

China.- Lottery ticket sales in China rose by 19.8 per cent year-on-year to RMB57bn (US$7.95bn) in May, according to data from the Ministry of Finance. The uptick was driven by domestic and international sports events, alongside a low comparison base from the same period last year.

Sales of sports lottery tickets rose by 26 per cent to RMB38.51bn (US$5.44bn). Welfare lottery sales, which fund social programs, reached RMB18.53bn ($2.61bn), an 8.6 per cent increase.

Cumulatively, between January and May, Chinese lottery sales amounted to RMB263.37bn ($37.06bn), up 4.3 per cent from the same period in 2024. In 2024, the lottery generated a record RMB620bn ($87.3bn) in sales.
