Zimbabwe Lotteries and Gaming Board inducts new board members
Induction introduces newly appointed members to the regulator’s governance role and oversight of Zimbabwe’s gambling sector.
Zimbabwe.- The Zimbabwe Lotteries and Gaming Board (LGB) has inducted newly appointed board members during a training workshop aimed at preparing them to oversee the country’s gambling and lottery activities.
New board members and staff gathered for the three-day programme, which focused on governance, oversight and how the regulator operates. Eugenia Chidhakwa, Chairperson of the LGB, opened the workshop, welcoming the incoming members and setting the tone for the training.
The LGB, established under the Lotteries and Gaming Act, falls under the portfolio of the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, which oversees the regulator’s governance and policy direction. The ministry said: “The Chairman of the Lotteries and Gaming Board, Dr Eugenia Chidhakwa today welcomed newly appointed Board Members to the induction workshop at Mana Resort in Harare.”
Chidhakwa emphasised the importance of the appointments, pointing to the experience and reputation of the individuals selected to serve on the board. She said the selection is testament to their professional standing, integrity and trustworthiness.
New chapter begins
The LGB keeps watch over casinos, sports betting operators, bookmakers and lottery activities across Zimbabwe. It also promotes responsible gambling and works to make sure operators comply with national laws and regulations as the country’s gaming market continues to expand.
The induction programme was described as a turning point for the board by Chidhakwa as it prepares to guide the sector. The Ministry said: “She said the induction was the beginning of a new chapter, one defined by commitment, strategic clarity and ethical leadership.”
During the sessions, participants were introduced to the Board’s core duties – from licensing operators to monitoring compliance and taking action where regulations are breached.
The Ministry added: “Dr Chidhakwa informed the new board members that they are expected to regulate and supervise gaming activities, protect the public interest, promote responsible gaming and ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory frameworks.”
For the Board, the induction is meant to get new members up to speed on the work ahead and the responsibilities that come with overseeing the sector.
