Uganda unveils University Eports Championships, spotlighting emerging gaming talent
Kampala hosts the inaugural University Esports Championships, uniting students nationwide to compete in major esports titles.
Uganda.- Uganda’s esports scene is levelling up as students from universities across the country converged in Kampala for the nation’s first University Esports Championships. Held on September 27 to 28 at the International University Hostel, the event put a spotlight on the next generation of gaming talent, transforming the city into a hub of strategy, skill and competitive energy.
The championship drew players from institutions nationwide to compete in popular esports titles, including Tekken 8, Motor Combat, FIFA, Valorant and PUBG Mobile, creating an electric atmosphere.
The Uganda Esports and Gaming Federation (UEGF), the national governing body for esports responsible for developing, promoting and regulating competitive gaming, said: “This championship is a game-changer for esports in Uganda. It’s about giving young gamers a platform to shine, compete fairly and show the world the talent brewing in our universities.”
Beyond the competition, the championships aimed to foster collaboration, community engagement and long-term growth in Uganda’s gaming ecosystem. For many students, the event offered a rare opportunity to showcase their skills nationally, earn recognition and inspire peers to pursue competitive gaming seriously.
The success of the inaugural edition has sparked discussions about integrating esports into university programs and extracurricular activities, positioning competitive gaming as a sustainable and celebrated pursuit.
With the first championship now complete, anticipation is building for next year’s event, promising larger venues, more games and higher stakes. Uganda’s esports community is charging forward, and these University Championships mark just the beginning.
