Uganda authorities confiscate more than 50 illegal gambling machines in crackdown
Unlicensed gambling machines confiscated in a three-day nationwide operation as authorities strengthen oversight and safeguard the regulated market.
Uganda.- Uganda authorities have seized more than 50 unlicensed gambling machines in a three-day nationwide operation aimed at curbing illegal gambling activities. The crackdown underscores the government’s commitment to protecting the legal gambling industry and ensuring consumer safety.
The Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB), in partnership with the police, led the operation, which was dubbed Mashine Haramu, meaning “illegal machine” in the local Uganda language. It targeted bars and hidden premises across Masaka City and Mpigi District, resulting in more than 30 machines being seized in Masaka and another 20 in Mpigi.
The LGRB said in a statement: “Our Enforcement Team, in collaboration with the dedicated men and women of the police, carried out a successful operation under Operation Mashine Haramu. Our team confiscated the illegal gaming machines, and several premises were sealed off.”
A suspect from the Masaka District was arrested for operating slot machines at a bar without a licence. She is expected to face charges at Makindye Standards Court under the Lotteries and Gaming Act Cap. 334.
Regulators emphasised that illegal machines undermine the legal market, divert government revenue and expose vulnerable communities to gambling harms.
The NLGRB issued a stern warning to operators of illegal gambling machines. “We issue a strong warning that anyone involved in the manufacture, supply, assembly or operation of illegal gaming machines is in direct violation of the law, undermining the legal gambling industry. Operation Mashine Haramu will sting.”
Authorities urge the public to report illegal operators via email or toll-free lines. “Your vigilance plays an important role in helping us regulate the gaming industry and safeguard the public,” the NLGRB said.
