Sun International appoints first operator-based Responsible Gambling Manager in South Africa
The gaming operator has named Tumelo Mokoena as Group Responsible Gambling Manager as it deepens its focus on player protection and responsible gambling.
South Africa.- Sun International has appointed Tumelo Mokoena as group responsible gambling manager, with the company describing the position as “the first-ever operator-based Responsible Gambling Manager for the group in South Africa.”
The appointment, announced by Sun International on LinkedIn on June 13, marks the latest step in the group’s responsible gambling strategy as player protection and regulatory oversight continue to gain prominence across the gaming sector.
Sun International said the newly-created role is designed to balance commercial growth with player protection by embedding responsible play across every touchpoint of the customer journey. The operator said the position would further support ethical gaming practices and help meet the demands of an increasingly regulated and data-driven environment.
Sun International CEO Ulrik Bengtsson said: “To underscore Sun International’s leadership in responsible gambling, we have appointed a full-time group responsible gambling manager. Tumelo will set our responsible gambling policy and framework, ensure the training of our people, and ultimately ensure that we adhere to our Responsible Gambling Charter, meaning that customers are safe and that we remain compliant with regulations.”
Bengtsson added that the role would play a key role in embedding responsible gambling across the business. “The responsible gambling manager will act as a link between customers, staff, regulators, and support organisations to ensure we follow best practice and foster a culture of sustainable and responsible gambling across the group,” he said.

Mokoena brings expertise in responsible gambling, public health research and industry advocacy to the role. She joins Sun International from the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation, where her work focused on advancing responsible gambling through education, stakeholder engagement and communications.
The company said Mokoena’s academic research into gambling behaviour and advertising, particularly among youth audiences, alongside her experience in the sector, would help shape the future of responsible gambling across the group.
The move comes as player protection and safer gambling continue to rank high on the agenda for operators and regulators across South Africa and the wider African market. Sun International said the move forms part of its broader commitment to safer play, ethical engagement and long-term sustainability.
