Suspension of national competitions leaves players, fans and sports bettors in limbo as the federation battles debt, strikes and broken promises.
Rabat, Morocco – In a seismic blow to one of the country’s most beloved sports, the Royal Morocco Basketball Federation (FRMBB) has hit the brakes on all national competitions, effective April 21, 2025.
The announcement, made in an official statement by the FRMBB, confirmed that the current season is indefinitely suspended due to a perfect storm of financial dysfunction, unpaid wages and administrative paralysis.
At the heart of the chaos is the termination of the federation’s insurance contract – a direct consequence of mounting, unresolved debts. Without insurance coverage, the risks are simply too high.
And as if that weren’t enough, FRMBB staff have downed tools in an open-ended strike, citing long-overdue salaries and bonuses. The federation’s woes deepened further when its telecommunications were cut off, effectively silencing its administrative arm.
A critical infusion of funds remains stuck in bureaucratic limbo, including the second instalment of ministerial support from last season and the yet-to-arrive allocation for this one.

The impact? Devastating. Playoffs were just around the corner. Teams like Ittihad Tangier and Wydad Casablanca were lacing up when the axe fell.
Moroccan basketball, once the second-most watched sport in the nation, now finds itself on life support. The national men’s team’s recent failures, including their absence from Afrobasket 2025 despite Rabat hosting qualifiers, only compound the crisis.
Ironically, hope had just been rekindled weeks ago during the BAL Kalahari Conference, which spotlighted Moroccan talent. The optimism has now curdled. A general meeting meant to address the crisis was scrapped amid escalating tensions, with organisers admitting they couldn’t proceed in such a climate.
With players, coaches and sport bettors caught in the crossfire, the situation demands more than a financial band-aid. It calls for bold leadership, transparency and above all, a renewed commitment to the game. Until then, the courts stay silent and Morocco’s basketball dreams remain benched.
