South Africa’s Sibaya Casino powers ahead with solar sustainability and operational growth

Sibaya Casino’s solar plant now powers 60 per cent of its operations, supporting sustainability and operational efficiency in South Africa’s premier gaming destination.

South Africa.- Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom, one of South Africa’s premier gaming destinations, is nearing its first year of operation for its 2.5 MWp solar plant, a milestone that strengthens both the casino’s sustainability and operational reliability.

Since its commissioning in April 2025, the solar project at Sibaya Casino – part of the Sun International group – supplies roughly 60 per cent of the electricity needed for the casino and its hotels. By reducing reliance on diesel generators during load‑shedding, it helps lower operational costs while delivering reliable power. The 4 590 solar panels, mounted as shaded carports over the parking area, generate approximately 3.699 GWh of clean energy annually, offering both power and comfort to thousands of guests.

Sibaya Casino said: “The aim of the solar plant was for the leisure and hospitality complex to reduce our reliance on diesel to prevent emissions during times of load‑shedding, and reduce electricity consumption during normal periods.”

The casino added: “By doing this, Sibaya not only saves money but also contributes towards Sun International’s environmental strategy which aims to manage energy efficiently and cost‑effectively.”

Sun International leads in green growth

The solar installation is part of Sun International’s broader sustainability‑linked strategy, supported by a R2.4 billion sustainability‑linked loan that promotes renewable energy generation across the group’s properties.

In early 2026, Sun International also appointed new executives to drive growth across gaming and hospitality: Mark Sergeant as Chief Operating Officer: Gaming and Nomzamo Radebe as Chief Operating Officer: Hospitality and Sales. These leadership changes reflect the group’s commitment to operational excellence and guest‑focused innovation, ensuring that both casino operations and hospitality services continue to thrive.

These moves complement Sun International’s focus on sustainability and energy efficiency. Sibaya Casino said: “By reducing our carbon footprint and investing in renewable energy, we are reinforcing our commitment to sustainability and operational efficiency while setting an example for the industry and contributing to a greener future for South Africa.”
