Senegal’s national lottery posts record profit in H1 2025
Analysts suggest the increase reflects wider economic pressures, as many Senegalese turn to gambling in search of financial relief amid limited job opportunities.
Senegal.- The Senegalese National Lottery (LONASE) has reported a profit of 20.7 billion CFA francs (€31.7m) for the first half of 2025, marking what observers describe as a historic high for the state-owned enterprise.
Managing Director Toussaint Manga announced the results, noting that total revenues of 37.2 billion CFA francs (€56.7m) were recorded between January and June, against operating expenses of 16.4 billion CFA francs (€25m).
LONASE, which manages lottery and betting activities across Senegal, attributed the figures to growing participation in its products, particularly lotteries and sports betting.
While Manga interpreted the results as proof of the company’s strong position in the gaming sector, he did not provide further details on the strategies behind the growth.
Analysts suggest the increase reflects wider economic pressures, as many Senegalese turn to gambling in search of financial relief amid limited job opportunities. The results also revive debate around LONASE’s dual role: generating state revenue while regulating the gaming industry to curb risks such as addiction.
Critics warn that the record revenue highlights reliance on vulnerable players, while supporters argue that the enterprise remains a vital contributor to public finances.
