NLC chairperson search narrows down to six candidates

South Africa.- The National Lotteries Commission (NLC) is moving forward with plans to appoint a new chairperson, as current board chair Professor Barney Pityana is set to retire by the end of 2025.
After reviewing 22 nominees, the parliamentary committee narrowed the field to six candidates. Interviews are scheduled for November 11 and 12, with the final recommendation to be sent to Minister Parks Tau for approval, pending security clearances and a public comment period that runs until November 10.
The six candidates bring diverse expertise across law, finance, governance and public service. Nomazotsho Yvonne Memani is an advocate with experience in high-stakes litigation in both the public and private sectors. Lufuno Toyko Nevondwe, also an attorney, currently chairs an independent trust managing lottery beneficiary funds and serves on the boards of the Film and Publication Board and the South African National Space Agency.
Judy Hermans is a former ANC MP and parliamentary committee chair, who championed lifestyle audits amid investigations into grant mismanagement. King Tembinkosi Bonakele, a lawyer and MBA holder, is an NLC board member who served nine years as commissioner of the Competition Commission of South Africa.
The list also includes Wayne Manthe, a chartered accountant with more than 30 years of experience in auditing and risk management, and Mpho Mosing, who chaired the audit and risk committee for the State Diamond Trader and participated in a Gauteng Liquor Board fraud inquiry.
