NFF threatens 10-year ban for match fixing
Offending referees could also face further legal action.
Nigeria.- The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has warned referees officiating matches in Nigeria’s professional leagues to maintain the integrity of the sport or face a lengthy ban.
In a circular released on April 23, 2025, the NFF warned referees that match-fixing would attract a minimum ban of 10 years and potential legal action.
The NFF defined match-fixing as “an attempt to determine/manipulate the outcome of matches outside the Laws of the game.” In the memo, it cautioned referees to remain impartial and resist any attempts by club officials and agents to manipulate match results.
The statement signed by NFF secretary Mohammed Ameenu read: “It is obvious that all the three Leagues (NPFL, NNL and NWFL) are at critical stage while the NLO will kick-start today, Wednesday, April 23, 2025. We are conscious that teams and their agents within and outside the refereeing as well as the football circles will mount pressure on you in order to court favours for their teams and pay masters.”
In addition to the ban, the football body warned that it would involve state security services in investigating and prosecuting offenders.
The federation also revealed that its president and general secretary have established a high-level independent monitoring committee to supervise match venues and report suspicious activities.
The NFF’s warning comes days after the NPFL announced a probe into match-fixing allegations involving Lobi Stars football club. The issue came to light when the team’s media officer, Emmanuel Ujah, alleged that club members were fixing matches and betting on the outcomes with local companies.
In recent times, there have been growing concerns over the integrity of Nigeria’s professional football leagues, especially the NPFL. Critics argue that the system is plagued by corruption, match-fixing and biased refereeing.
With the warning, the NFF aims to salvage the reputation of the NPFL as it enters a decisive phase where key matches will decide the fate of teams and players.
