GrandWest Casino to open R600m retail mall transforming entertainment in South Africa

GrandWest Casino is doubling down on lifestyle and leisure with a sleek new shopping mall, redefining the entertainment experience.

South Africa.- South Africa’s premier GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World is raising the stakes in the entertainment arena. It will soon welcome a stunning R600 million ($33.9m) shopping mall, elevating the casino giant into a vibrant all-in-one leisure hotspot.

The ambitious project will rise within the iconic Cape Town precinct, covering 22,000 square metres and delivering a powerful mix of retail and community-focused spaces.

The mall, aptly named GrandWest Mall, will be directly connected to the casino, combining gaming, entertainment and shopping in one dynamic precinct.

The development is a joint venture between the Flanagan and Gerard Property Group and gaming giant Sun International, which is a major shareholder in SunWest, which owns and operates GrandWest Casino alongside local empowerment partners.

Paul Gerard, managing director of Flanagan and Gerard, confirmed that all regulatory approvals were secured, giving the green light for the project to be launched next week.

“The mall will complement the excellent entertainment offering already available at GrandWest Casino, which includes the gaming area, several restaurants, the ice rink, GrandWest Arena and two hotels in the precinct,” said Gerard, according to Moneyweb.’

“It will have 60 stores and outlets, including two supermarket anchors and two pharmacies, in addition to fashion, athleisure, services, health and beauty, banking and new restaurant offerings.”

The stakes in GrandWest

The mall will feature more upmarket finishes and specifications, considering it will be part of Sun International’s biggest gaming complex and the only casino currently in the Cape Town metro, according to Gerard.

Flanagan and Gerard Property Group will hold a two-thirds stake in GrandWest Mall, with Sun International owning the balance.

This marks the most significant upgrade to GrandWest since its R1.56 billion ($88.1m) launch in 2000, said Sun International’s Western Cape regional director, Mervyn Naidoo.

“It also follows our recent R122 million ($6.9m) expansion of the Grand Hotel from 39 rooms to 103 rooms, which was completed in November 2023,” he said.

GrandWest is set to redefine South Africa’s entertainment landscape by seamlessly blending luxury retail and world-class gaming under one roof, promising a new era of leisure and excitement.
