Ghana NLA’s new POS terminal delivers first lottery win with instant payout
An Accra Lotto Marketing Operator and agent has become the first reported winner using the new terminal, with the NoonRush prize paid instantly at Trade Fair.
Ghana.- Ghana’s National Lottery Authority (NLA) has recorded the first lottery win using its new NLA-Fidelity point-of-sale (POS) Terminal, with the prize paid instantly to the winner.
The NLA said Lotto Marketing Operator and agent Mercy Opebia Opoku became the first person to win a lottery using the new terminal on September 17. Opoku, who operates at the Ghana International Trade Fair Centre in La, Accra, staked on the NoonRush draw and won with numbers 58–82. The NLA said her prize was paid instantly through the new terminal.
The development follows the NLA’s partnership with Fidelity Bank to digitise Ghana’s lottery operations through the deployment of 5,000 new POS terminals. The authority subsequently trained staff on the new machines as part of preparations for the rollout, with the terminals designed to support faster lottery transactions and instant prize payments.
Murphy Adu-Kwao, Greater Accra Regional Manager, joined Opoku in celebrating the win and encouraged Lotto Marketing Companies and customers to adopt the terminals as a convenient and efficient means of staking. The NLA said the technology is intended to support improved service delivery across Ghana’s lottery industry.
The first win comes as the NLA prepares to move the country’s lottery sector further towards digital operations. The authority has set October 1 as the deadline for private lotto operators, agents and writers to transition from manual, paper-based operations to POS terminals.
The NLA’s announcement provides an early example of the instant-payment function associated with the NLA-Fidelity Bank POS rollout, which the authority said would allow eligible prizes of up to GH¢30,000 (US$2,100) to be paid instantly.
