Ghana launches first national esports league
Ghana Esports League (GEL) aims to transform local gaming talent into global contenders with professional structure, rankings and rewards.
Ghana.- Ghana’s gaming scene just levelled up. The Esports Association Ghana (EAG) has officially launched the Ghana Esports League (GEL), a ground-breaking initiative set to reshape the future of competitive gaming in the country.
Launching with a pre-season tournament in August, GEL is gearing up to be more than just another showdown. With debut titles like EA Sports FC25 and eFootball 25, the league marks a ground-breaking first as Ghana’s very own national platform designed to develop, rank and reward elite gaming talent.
President of EAG, Kwesi Hayford, described the launch as a turning point for the country’s digital sports scene.
“The Ghana Esports League (GEL) marks a new era for competitive gaming in Ghana. This league isn’t just about gaming; it’s about providing structure, recognition and professional pathways for our players, coaches, content creators and industry stakeholders,” he said, according to MyJoyOnline news.
GEL will serve up a mix of online and offline matchups, pulling in top-tier teams from every corner of the country. On the line are national rankings, media spotlight and league placements that could shake up the scene for years and put Ghana’s esports stars squarely on the global radar.
“We are building an ecosystem that can thrive locally and compete globally,” said Hayford.
Wondhakid fuels Ghana esports rise
Celebrated esports star Frank Adotapo, better known as Wondhakid, championed the long-awaited platform, calling it a game-changer for Ghana’s competitive scene.
“This is what we’ve been waiting for. The Ghana Esports League is a game-changer. As a player, I’ve seen the hunger and talent in this country. We just needed the right platform. GEL is going to push us to new heights and show the world what Ghanaian gamers are made of,” he said.
Developed in partnership with regional and industry stakeholders, the league is open to corporate sponsorship, media collaboration and technical support from institutions keen on advancing Ghana’s esports and digital innovation sector.
The countdown has begun. For Ghana’s gaming elite, the stage is finally set.
