Zambia.- Zambia is stepping up to ensure it welcomes a total of three million international tourists by the end of 2025, with the rapidly expanding gambling sector playing a key and transformative role in reaching this milestone.

The country put the spotlight on casino licensing as a key part of promoting gambling’s role in boosting tourism at the 97th Agricultural and Commercial Show held from July 30 to August 4.

The event celebrated innovation, growth and partnerships across agriculture, commerce and tourism. Including casino licensing at the prominent event indicated the government’s recognition of gambling as an expanding industry that can bring in foreign visitors and investment, alongside the country’s famous tourism features.

A Ministry of Tourism report revealed that international arrivals increased significantly, rising from 1.3 million in 2023 to 2.2 million in 2024; underscoring Zambia’s growing appeal as a key destination in the region.

Minister Rodney Sikumba pointed out the rapid growth, saying: “With the momentum we’re seeing, our target of 2.4 million arrivals is well within reach, and we might just break through the 3 million mark.”

He also stressed how important tourism is to Zambia’s economy, which grew by 4 per cent in 2024, with hopes of hitting 6 per cent growth this year.

Gambling the new frontier in tourism

While Zambia has long attracted visitors with its rich wildlife, vibrant cultural heritage and eco-tourism offerings, the gambling sector is quickly emerging as a significant contributor to the country’s tourism economy. It’s opening new doors and helping to diversify Zambia’s appeal.

By adding casino licensing alongside tourism licensing and grading at the 97th Agricultural and Commercial Show, the Ministry is signalling plans to fully bring regulated gambling into the country’s tourism mix.

Popular venues like Lusaka Royale Casino, Majestic Casino and Casino Marina, spread across several cities, are already drawing in both local and international visitors, showing that Zambia’s hospitality offers more than just its natural attractions.

The focus on casino licensing at the Agricultural & Commercial Show reflects Zambia’s changing approach to tourism – using gambling as a fresh attraction to encourage more visitors and investment.
