Gambling revenue sparks social development in Nigeria’s Lagos state
With funds from Lagos State’s regulated gambling sector, major social initiatives are underway, including schools, healthcare centres and community projects across the state.
Nigeria.- Nigeria’s Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA) has indicated that gambling-sector revenue has delivered major social benefits over the past four years, funding a range of community programmes across Lagos State.
LSLGA emphasised that gaming growth comes with safeguards, using SafePlay, age verification and digital campaigns to promote responsible gambling while ensuring social benefits are achieved safely.
Chief Executive Officer of LSLGA Bashir Are said, according Vanguard News: “In the past four years, we have renovated 30 schools, built healthcare centres, equipped fire stations and supported initiatives in sports, security and domestic violence response.”
Are added: “We are delighted that revenue from gaming has contributed significantly to development of the state.”
Promoting responsible gambling
Beyond these development gains, the authority is intensifying public-awareness efforts, using digital platforms to educate residents on safe gambling. “The internet has amplified everything. That is why you see our weekly campaigns on Facebook, Twitter and other platforms,” Are said, adding that their social media campaigns focus on preventing underage and problem gambling.
Lagos remains a tightly controlled market. Are said: “Our primary responsibility is to protect vulnerable groups. You cannot open a betting wallet unless your identification has been confirmed and you are over 18 years. We also sanction operators who fail to strictly verify their customers.”
The authority has additionally rolled out SafePlay, a self-exclusion tool, and continues to support therapy for individuals battling gambling addiction – reinforcing its dual focus on community development and player protection.
