Gambling regulator MAGLA allocates K300m to support Malawi’s disaster relief efforts
MAGLA’s contribution falls within its statutory and corporate responsibility framework.
Malawi.- The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) has allocated K300m (€158,000) to support Malawi’s 2025/26 Lean Season and Emergency Response Programmes, positioning the country’s gambling regulator as a major contributor to national disaster relief efforts.
The funding was formally presented on March 21 in Mangochi, where MAGLA Board chairperson Proud Chalira said the intervention follows an appeal by President Arthur Peter Mutharika for financial and material assistance after a state of disaster was declared. The declaration was linked to prolonged dry spells that have disrupted food production and increased food insecurity.
Chalira stated that MAGLA’s contribution falls within its statutory and corporate responsibility framework, which directs a portion of proceeds from regulated gaming activities to public interest causes.
At the event, Chief Secretary to the Malawi government, Justin Saidi, described the funding as timely, noting that it would support ongoing relief operations coordinated by the government and its partners.
The donation is expected to be channelled through the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) to support food distribution, emergency supplies and recovery efforts. The agency is supporting about 4 million food-insecure individuals, alongside more than 21,000 households affected by recent heavy rains and flooding, which has intensified the humanitarian situation.
MAGLA’s intervention highlights the role of regulated gambling institutions in national development frameworks, particularly in emerging markets where public financing gaps exist.
