GamblePause launches African-built app to strengthen player protection
Nigeria-based GamblePause Initiative Africa combines gambling blocking, self-exclusion and recovery tools in a Pan-African player-protection platform.
Nigeria.- GamblePause Initiative Africa, a Nigeria-based responsible gambling organisation, has launched an African-built app designed to strengthen player protection across the continent.
The GamblePause App, launched on August 17, is a technology solution developed around Africa’s specific gambling environment, with the organisation saying it was built with “Africa’s realities, people and languages in mind.” GamblePause described the launch as a new chapter in player protection across Africa designed to help prevent gambling-related harm.
The organisation’s launch announcement said the app represents its commitment to using technology for social impact. It said: “Built for Africa. By Africans. To protect.”
GamblePause promoted the app as a responsible-gaming solution offering underage protection, self-exclusion in more than 40 African languages, a Pan-African support and recovery directory, and tools to identify and report illegal operators.
The platform also brings together self-exclusion, blocking technology, parental controls, prediction-market restrictions, recovery tracking and support resources. Founder and CEO Ladipo Abiose said the platform was designed around African regulatory environments, languages and gambling behaviours. “The launch of the GamblePause app is proof that lived experience can become meaningful impact,” Abiose said, according to AfriGaming Bulletin.
GamblePause is also linking player protection to illegal gambling through its Pan-African Guard, which is designed to tackle illegal and unlicensed gambling while supporting regulators and operators. The initiative places technology within the broader relationship between consumers, businesses and regulators.
The launch comes as GamblePause expands its work across African markets. In July, GamblePause partnered with the Namibia Development Foundation Trust (NAMDEF) to strengthen responsible gaming. GamblePause has also expanded into Zambia, where it is working with GamAid Zambia on responsible gambling, player protection and gambling-harm prevention.
Abiose has argued that player protection should form part of the industry’s long-term strategy rather than being treated solely as a regulatory obligation. “Player protection is not a cost; it is an investment in the future of the industry,” he said. “This is bigger than an app. It’s the beginning of a Pan-African movement to build a safer, healthier, and more sustainable gaming ecosystem for generations to come.”
