Botswana steps up Limited Payout Machine rollout with regulatory training drive
The Gambling Authority of Botswana ramps up internal capacity with LPM training as retail gaming rollout gains momentum.
Botswana.- Botswana’s Gambling Authority has conducted a two-day training workshop on Limited Payout Machines (LPMs) as it strengthens regulatory capacity to support the nationwide rollout of retail gaming.
LPMs are low-stakes gaming devices, similar to slot machines, but designed with strict limits on both bets and winnings. They are being introduced in licensed retail environments such as bars, liquor restaurants and guest houses as part of a regulated framework.
The Authority said: “This training ensures our staff are fully equipped to support the system’s continued rollout.” The machines operate under the oversight of the Gambling Authority, with the model aimed at expanding access to legal gaming while maintaining regulatory control and supporting responsible gambling measures.
The training forms part of broader efforts to strengthen internal capacity as LPMs are deployed across the country. The Authority confirmed that implementation is already underway, with recent activity including a Phase 4 launch at a local venue, Leoba Bar.
The expansion into retail venues signals a shift towards distributed gaming beyond traditional casino settings. The initiative is designed to ensure staff are equipped to oversee the system as deployment accelerates, with a focus on operational understanding, compliance and monitoring.
The move also aligns with Botswana’s wider responsible gambling strategy, highlighted through the Motshameko o Phepha campaign, as regulators look to balance sector growth with player protection.
