Botswana Gambling Authority resumes nationwide Motshameko o Phepa campaign

By mid-January 2026, the campaign had reached 173 sites in roughly two and a half months.

Botswana.- The Botswana Gambling Authority has started its Motshameko o Phepa campaign for the year, releasing the schedule for week 12 as part of its efforts to promote safe betting practices across the country. With the initiative, which translates to “Play Clean” in English, the regulator aims to conduct responsible gambling outreaches across 500 sites in all 27 administrative districts by mid-2026.

The initiative was initially launched on September 22, 2025, in Francistown, and has since seen the authority visit hundreds of communities to educate players and operators on responsible gambling practices and the risks associated with problem betting.

This week’s programme, scheduled between January 26 and 31, will be conducted in areas including Makalambabedi, Zoroga, Modipane, Tsokathaa, Tlokweng, Serowe, Sepako, Maposa, Dikgonye, Damochujenaa, Mosetse, Rasesa, Mmadinare, Tutume and Bobonong. Sessions will take place mainly at shops and kgotlas, while some will be held at teachers’ training colleges, from 10:00 to 20:00 hours each day. Participants will receive information on setting time and money limits, understanding odds, and accessing support tools such as self-exclusion programmes.

By mid-January 2026, the campaign had reached 173 sites in roughly two and a half months, according to a recent media briefing by acting ceo Moruntshi Kemorwale in Gaborone.

The campaign’s resumption aligns with the authority’s 2026 priorities, which include stronger enforcement against illegal influencers and improved player protection. Officials project gambling revenue to reach P1 billion (€68.6m) by March 2026, highlighting the need to balance industry growth with responsible gambling measures.
