BGA acting CEO emphasises regulatory integrity at BiG Africa Summit 2026

Moruntshi Kemorwale highlighted that a credible and predictable regulatory environment is essential for attracting quality investment and maintaining public trust

Botswana.- Botswana’s gambling regulator has reaffirmed its commitment to building a transparent, ethical and investor-ready gambling sector. Speaking at the 12th Annual BiG Africa Summit, acting CEO of the Botswana Gambling Authority (BGA), Moruntshi Kemorwale, emphasised that regulatory integrity and the rule of law will remain the foundation of the country’s gaming market development.

Kemorwale outlined the authority’s regulatory goals, positioning strong oversight as central to sustainable industry growth rather than a barrier to expansion. He said: “From a Botswana perspective, our ambition is clear. We seek to build a gambling sector that is transparent, ethical and firmly anchored on the rule of law.”

He highlighted that a credible and predictable regulatory environment is essential for attracting quality investment and maintaining public trust. As gambling markets evolve, particularly with the rise of digital platforms and technology-driven betting products, regulators must adopt agile, risk-based frameworks capable of responding to rapid change without compromising consumer protection.

Safeguarding market integrity and strengthening compliance mechanisms remain strategic priorities for Botswana. Kemorwale stressed the importance of balancing innovation with responsible gambling safeguards, noting that regulatory systems must continuously adapt to emerging risks while supporting legitimate operators.

He further underscored that transparency and ethical standards are key to establishing Botswana as a stable and competitive player in Africa’s expanding gambling sector. By anchoring industry development in robust governance, the BGA seeks to build lasting confidence among local stakeholders and international investors.

The BiG Africa Summit 2026 was held from February 16 to 19 at the Grand Palm Casino and Convention Resort in Gaborone. Organised by Eventus International with support from the BGA, the summit brought together regulators, operators, investors and technology providers to discuss market opportunities, regulatory alignment and responsible growth across Africa’s gambling ecosystem.
