Botswana.- Botswana is strengthening oversight of its online betting sector after complaints highlighted operators going offline during peak usage, slow payouts and inadequate support. The Botswana Gambling Authority (BGA) has responded by enforcing stricter rules that aim to improve reliability and boost consumer confidence.
A Business Explainer report said: “The Gambling Authority has announced plans to tighten oversight of licensed betting operators following a rise in consumer complaints linked to technical failures and payment delays.”
The BGA said that licensed operators must now comply with technical standards, timely payout rules and robust dispute resolution procedures, with fines or licence suspensions for those who fail.
“The regulator said it intends to rein in firms accused of disadvantaging customers through system blackouts, unexplained interruptions, weak record‑keeping and prolonged payout processing” added the report.
The move is set to strengthen Botswana’s online betting market. Clearer rules and enforced standards are expected to give legitimate operators the opportunity to innovate, improve services and grow their businesses in a more professional environment.
The crackdown comes alongside broader concerns about unlicensed and offshore operators, which authorities warn pose significant risks to players.
