betPawa ends operations in Senegal to focus on other African markets

Strategic shift allows betPawa to grow in African markets with fair regulation, open payment systems and responsible gaming practices.

Senegal.-pawaTech, the licensor of the popular betPawa brand, has announced it will cease operations in Senegal, effective September 22. The company said it plans to redirect its focus to African markets where regulatory conditions, taxation and payment systems are more favourable for locally licensed operators.

pawaTech said in a statement: “This difficult decision results from the current market environment in Senegal, which has created significant challenges for locally licensed and taxed operators. High taxes, a payment monopoly and significant regulatory fees have placed local operators at a clear disadvantage compared to offshore operators.”

These challenges, the company explained, have created an uneven playing field, making it difficult for locally regulated businesses to operate compliantly while delivering the competitive products and offers customers expect.

pawaTech said its local partners remain committed to responsible, transparent and sustainable operations across Africa. “In other African markets with competitive taxation and open payment systems, locally licensed operators like betPawa played a vital role in providing a compelling and responsible product to consumers, expanding the gaming industry, increasing government tax revenues and creating local jobs.”

Regulatory hurdles in Senegal have driven much activity abroad. “In Senegal, however, the restrictive conditions have instead pushed much of the activity offshore, weakening the positive impact of licensed operators on both the economy and the community,” said pawaTech.

The company added: “While current conditions in Senegal make continued operations impossible, we remain hopeful that conditions will improve, allowing us to return and once again contribute positively to the local economy.”

The company’s commitment to responsible gaming is further demonstrated by its membership in the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA), which aims to bolster sports betting integrity across African markets. Customers in Senegal have been assured that “all funds remain safe and will be returned promptly following the closure”.

The latest move allows betPawa to concentrate on markets across Africa where regulation supports growth, innovation and community impact, continuing to drive the expansion of the continent’s gaming industry while promoting responsible and sustainable gaming.
