Betika backs Uganda’s first structured padel league

The betting operator partnered with Smash Padel to launch a nine-week competition aimed at bringing structure and community engagement to Uganda’s growing padel scene.

Uganda.- Betika Uganda has expanded beyond football sponsorships after investing more than UGX15m (US$4,000) into what organisers say is the country’s first structured padel league.

The betting operator partnered with Kampala-based organiser Smash Padel to launch the Betika Smash Premier League, a nine-week tournament aimed at introducing recurring fixtures and greater competitive organisation to Uganda’s emerging padel scene.

The inaugural season concluded on May 23 at Smash Padel Bukoto in Kampala, where Smash Devils were crowned champions and awarded a UGX5m (US$1,350) cash prize alongside medals and the league trophy.

The league featured four clubs – Smash Devils, Smash Gunners, Smash Blues and Smash Reds – competing in an English Premier League-style format. Each club consisted of 15 players across five skill levels as organisers sought to create balanced competition and broader participation.

According to organisers, the project was designed to move padel beyond casual social play by creating club identities, rivalries and a recurring matchday experience. Weekly Saturday fixtures also included music, food and fan entertainment to strengthen community engagement around the sport.

Darshil Kamal Shah, co-founder of Smash Padel and co-creator of the Betika Smash Premier League, said: “If padel is going to grow in Uganda, it deserves more than just casual play. It needed clubs, rivalries, stakes, identity, and compelling reasons for players and fans to return week after week.”

Rather than attaching branding to an existing tournament, the operator helped shape the competition and matchday experience from the ground up. Desire Akanduhura, Marketing Lead at Betika Uganda, said: “The opportunity lies not in waiting for the sport to become mainstream, but in getting involved early and playing a meaningful role in its growth.”

Padel, a racket sport combining elements of tennis and squash, has become one of the world’s fastest-growing sports, with increasing investment in courts, tournaments and leagues across Africa. Both Betika Uganda and Smash Padel said plans are already underway for a second season, with expectations of expanded participation and further development of the league.
