Betika expands community push with Meru Football Challenge
Operator stages third edition of Kenyan tournament, using equal prize pools to strengthen regional engagement
Kenya.- Betika held the third edition of its Meru Football Challenge, reinforcing its community-focused strategy in Kenya through a multi-week football tournament aimed at expanding local participation and strengthening its presence in regional markets.
Staged in Meru County, the competition ran from early March and concluded in late March, progressing from group stages to knockout rounds and finals. The tournament featured both men’s and women’s categories, drawing local teams and supporters in a structured format built around competitive play and community turnout.
Betika said: “From the intensity on the pitch to the unwavering support in the stands, it was a true celebration of community and sport.”
The tournament had a tiered prize structure, with Betika offering equal payouts for the men’s and women’s games. Winning teams from each of the categories received KES1m (€7,100), while second-place finishers earned KES500,000 (€3,550) and third-place teams took home KES250,000 (€1,775).
The equal prize model reflects a broader shift among operators in East Africa, where community-led activations are increasingly used to align commercial objectives with inclusion and brand positioning.
For Betika, the Meru Football Challenge forms part of a wider push to extend its footprint beyond major urban centres, using sport to build brand affinity and long-term engagement in key regional markets.
