Angola’s Institute for Gaming Supervision (ISJ) strengthens cooperation with municipal authorities in Viana to combat illegal gambling and support the country’s regulated gaming sector.

Angola.- Angola’s Institute for Gaming Supervision (ISJ) has moved to strengthen cooperation with authorities in the major municipality of Viana as part of efforts to support the country’s legal gambling industry while cracking down on illegal gaming activity.

The ISJ announced closer coordination with municipal officials in Viana following a recent working meeting aimed at strengthening efforts to prevent and combat illegal gambling. The meeting brought together ISJ Deputy Director-General Cláudio Paulo and Viana Municipal Administrator Demétrio de Sepúlveda to align strategies to improve monitoring and oversight of gambling activities.

The ISJ said: “Illegal gambling has significant impacts, both on the economic and social level, affecting the state, the formal economy and families.”

Strengthening gambling oversight

Officials discussed strengthening cooperation between national regulators and municipal authorities to identify and curb illicit gambling operations operating outside Angola’s legal framework.

Unlicensed gambling can have significant economic and social consequences, including lost tax revenue for the state, unfair competition for licensed operators and a lack of protection for players, the regulator said. The regulator also warned that unregulated gambling environments typically lack safeguards such as age verification, betting limits and self-exclusion tools designed to support responsible gambling.

Authorities further noted that illegal gambling operations can contribute to organised crime and increase the risk of gambling addiction. The initiative forms part of broader efforts by the ISJ to strengthen oversight of Angola’s gaming sector.
