ABSA Tanzania’s digital banking drive fuels growth in online gambling
Digital banking initiatives from ABSA Tanzania enhance transactions and drive growth in online casinos and sports betting.
Tanzania.- ABSA Bank Tanzania is pushing the country closer to a cashless economy, a move set to transform online gambling. The bank’s digital banking initiative is making it faster and safer for players to deposit and withdraw funds, boosting trust and convenience on online casino and sports betting platforms.
ABSA’s “Play Your Card Right” campaign, launched on September 30, promotes the use of debit and credit cards, internet banking, mobile banking and agency services. These tools are critical for smooth, efficient payments in the online gambling ecosystem. Faster, safer and more convenient transactions build player trust and help operators manage their platforms effectively.
The Bank’s Director of Retail Banking, Ndabu Swere, said that by promoting card usage and digital banking, ABSA aims to simplify transactions, expand financial inclusion and support the country’s broader digital transformation agenda. “Through this campaign, we aim to accelerate the transition to a cashless economy by offering customers safer and more convenient ways to bank,” she said, according to the Daily News.
The initiative highlights ABSA’s commitment to innovation and providing secure, accessible banking solutions for all Tanzanians. The campaign offers a total prize pool of TZS120m (€42,000), distributed through weekly, monthly and grand draws, incentivising customers to adopt digital payments.
Booming online gambling sector boosted

The Head of Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Aron Luhanga, added that this transition “enhances transparency, reduces cash-handling costs and drives economic efficiency“.
For online gambling operators, the benefits are clear: more reliable payments, faster transactions and greater player confidence, all of which are critical for growth and trust in the sector. Reflecting this trend, Tanzania’s online gambling industry has surged, generating TZS260.21bn (€90.8m) over the past four years, nearly double the TZS131.99bn (€46.1m) recorded in the previous period, according to the Gaming Board of Tanzania.
This growth is being fuelled by mobile money adoption, stricter licensing and rising interest in digital casinos and online sports betting. Over the past two years, 62 licensed operators invested TZS66.7bn (€23.3m) and offered 8,549 betting games, while the national lottery operator introduced online draws to enhance transparency.
ABSA’s campaign could accelerate this trend further by making digital payments more accessible, secure and trackable. This benefits both players and regulators, supporting responsible gambling practices.
As Tanzania continues its digital transformation, initiatives like this demonstrate how financial technology can enable safer, faster and more transparent participation in online betting while supporting economic growth and regulatory compliance.
