West Virginia reports sports betting revenue rise
The sports betting industry in West Virginia continues to grow, this time by posting an increase in revenues in October.
US.- West Virginia’s sports betting market experienced a great October: revenues from sports betting continue to increase in the state. The West Virginia Lottery Commission‘s figures show that sports betting revenue totalled US$4.6 million.
The US$4.6 million were registered in West Virginia in the four weeks through to October 26. The revenue comes from sports betting handle of both retail and mobile betting apps of US$29 million.
Retail sports betting is still the most popular sports betting vertical in the state, registering US$2.7 million in revenue and US$16.3 million in handle in October. Mobile betting reported US$1.8 million in revenue and US$12.7 million in sports betting handle.
The leading operator in October was Penn National Gaming’s Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races. The facility’s sportsbook totalled US$3.5 million in sports betting revenue in October after processing US$19.1 million in bets.
Greyhound numbers decline
The two greyhound racing facilities in the state have reported declines in the past five years. Between 2014 and 2018, in-person wagering at the greyhound racing facilities declined 13%.
Wheeling Island Casino in Ohio County and Mardi Gras Casino in Kanawha County experienced the 13% decline in that period. The latter’s live wagers fell from US$4.1 million in 2014 to US$3.12 million in 2018, representing a 24% decline. On the other hand, Wheeling totalled US$10.1 million in 2018, a 9% decline from 2014’s US$11.2 million.
