West Virginia moves forward with sports betting
With recent federal approval, the State of West Virginia revealed its plans to set up a sports betting market.
US.- West Virginia is moving forward with its plans to establish an official sports betting market now that the Federal Government will allow it following the US Supreme Court’s resolution that has ended the prohibition. As reported by local newspapers, casino owners, state lottery officials and local lawmakers have been discussing different proposals to set the market.
“We’re ahead of the curve in terms of already having that (sports betting) law in place,” Brad Humphreys, an economics professor at West Virginia University’s College of Business and Economics, told WV Newspaper. “Nationwide, it’s still pretty uncertain how things are going to shake out.”
Potential operators of sports betting platforms in West Virginia are the Casino Club at The Greenbrier, Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races, Mardi Gras Casino and Resort, Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort, Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack, as reported by local gaming newspapers.
The bill signed by West Virginia Governor Jim Justice would allow sports betting at local licensed casinos, as well as Lottery Commission-approved mobile device apps. The legislation says that ten per cent of gross receipts will be collected by the state, while it also states that bettors would need to be at least 21 years of age to engage in that activity.
