West Virginia bills propose sports betting and igaming tax increase

The proposals would raise sportsbook and online casino rates to 25 per cent.

US.- Two bills introduced in West Virginia would increase the tax rates on gambling in the state. Delegate Adam Burkhammer filed House Bill 4398, which would increase the sportsbook tax rate from 10 per cent to 25 per cent, and House Bill 4397, which proposes raising the igaming tax rate from 15 per cent to the same level.

Both bills would require operators to submit weekly tax reports and payments. The bills have been referred to the House Government Organization Committee.

In 2025, New Jersey lawmakers passed Bill A5803 in the state Senate and in the House, paving the way for a rise in the tax rates on igaming and mobile sports betting from 13 and 15 per cent, respectively, to 19.75 per cent. There have also been tax change in Illinois, while Maryland governor Wes Moore signed off on House Bill 352, increasing the state’s online sports betting tax rate from 15 to 20 per cent and lawmakers in Louisiana approved a tax rise from 15 to 21.5 per cent.
