New bill proposes new powers against illegal online gaming in Iowa

The Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing has proposed a bill to grant the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission authority to address unlicensed gambling sites. The bill, filed ahead of the 2026 legislative session, would allow the commission to issue cease-and-desist orders to unregulated gambling operations. Tina Eick, the regulator’s administrator, emphasised the need for clear authority to take action against unlicensed operators to ensure fair games, secure information and funds, responsible gaming practices, and tax compliance. The proposed bill aims to strengthen the regulatory system and hold all gambling operators accountable in Iowa.

Pressure mounts for end to “aim to permit” rule for British betting shops and gaming halls

Pressure is mounting on UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to abolish the 2005 rule that limits local authorities’ ability to block the opening of new betting shops and 24-hour slot-machine venues. Introduced under Tony Blair’s gambling reforms, the “aim to permit” rule requires licensing authorities to favour approval for gambling premises. Labour MP Dawn Butler organised a letter signed by 300 politicians and campaigners calling for the rule’s removal, arguing that it has stripped councils of meaningful power. While the government had pledged to give councils more influence through cumulative impact assessments, critics argue that only scrapping the aim-to-permit requirement would restore local control. Campaigners highlight the harm of gambling addiction, while industry representatives emphasise the economic and community benefits of betting shops. Despite this, the number of betting shops in Britain has fallen by 29 per cent since 2019.

Portuguese casino licences temporarily extended as tender process delayed

The Portuguese gambling regulator, SRIJ, has extended current casino concessions in Algarve, Espinho, and Póvoa de Varzim regions while a new tender is conducted. The Estoril-Sol group will give up the Póvoa de Varzim casino after 25 years, with only one bid submitted by Groupe Lucien Barrière. Solverde is the sole applicant for the Espinho casino and is also bidding to renew Algarve casino concessions. Estoril-Sol continues to operate casinos in Estoril and Lisbon. The timeline for the new licences has been extended by three months to evaluate bids. The move aims to comply with formalities, with Varzim Sol’s operating rights extended for 120 days. Lucien Barrière Group operates 32 casinos in France, Egypt, and Côte d’Ivoire. For more information, see the Proposal for ban on gambling ads in Portugal.

New report finds public support for gambling advertising restrictions in the UK

The article discusses a report urging the UK government to acknowledge changing public attitudes towards gambling. The study by More in Common reveals concerns about the saturation of gambling promotions and the lack of protection from potential harms. It categorises the population into seven groups based on values and behaviours, highlighting widespread unease about the visibility of gambling in everyday life. The report emphasises parallels with tobacco marketing and calls for stricter regulations, especially regarding sports sponsorships. There is a decline in trust in regulatory bodies like the Gambling Commission, with calls for stronger oversight and accountability. The article also mentions the push for advertising reforms, with a focus on shielding under-18s from gambling promotions. The Coalition to End Gambling Ads is working towards reducing gambling advertisements, with growing political concern about the industry’s impact.

Romania’s gambling regulator outlines 2026 compliance agenda

The Romanian gambling regulator ONJN has revealed its program for 2026, focusing on compliance and restoring regulatory credibility. President Vlad-Cristian Soare highlighted progress in combating illegal gambling and enhancing transparency. New initiatives include a WhatsApp reporting channel and enforcement measures like a nationwide self-exclusion scheme and geolocation-based QR system. The ONJN will oversee a structured investment in community initiatives and support legislative changes to modernise gambling laws. Lawmakers are proposing various reforms, such as raising the legal gambling age and restricting advertising. The ONJN faces calls for reform or replacement to regain public trust.
