Virginia casino legalisation gets closer
A Senate committee passed the Virginia casino legalisation proposal and took another step to the segment’s arrival in several counties.
US.- 2020 has kicked off with the right pace for the gaming industry in the US. At least it did in Virginia, where casino legalisation seems to be getting closer.
This week, a Senate committee approved a proposal to launch the vertical in the state. The push would get casinos launching in Bristol, Danville, Richmond, Norfolk and Portsmouth.
“Just give us an opportunity to determine our own destiny,” said Democratic Sen. Louise Lucas of Portsmouth.
Governor Ralph Northam advanced he’s “open” to legalise casinos in the state if done correctly.
“It’s clear that there’s going to be a robust discussion in the General Assembly this year regarding legalized gaming. There are several proposals on the table. Our legislators are going to thoroughly vet them,” Northam said. “My philosophy is Virginia needs to be very thoughtful in its approach. If we’re going to expand gambling, we need to do it responsibly.”

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) seem to have finally reached their goal. According to chief Richard Sneed, they have come to an agreement with the state to develop a casino in Virginia.
The venue would include an outdoor concert venue, recreational facilities and a hotel.
“I have visited the site along I-81. This strategic, gateway location to serve a five-state area is impressive,” Sneed said. “It is our wish to bring new tax revenue and jobs to Washington County and the Southwest Virginia region.
