UKGC warns about problem gambling

UKGC has warned that problem gambling affects over 400,000 residents from the United Kingdom.

UK.- The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has warned the government about the expansion of problem gambling after revealing over 400,000 residents struggle with it. The governmental entity reassured its compromise of a fairer and safer gaming industry with proper regulations and control.

“Whilst overall problem gambling rates in Britain have remained statistically stable, our research suggests that in excess of two million people are at risk or classed as problem gamblers, with very many more impacted by the wider consequences of gambling related harm,” stated Gambling Commission executive director Tim Miller as revealed by Racing Post.

The latest report on problem gambling has updated the 2010 information, leading UKGC to urge the government for further action against addiction. According to the commission, the results represent a “significant challenge” for authorities. The report shows that 1.4 per cent of players are problem gamblers (0.8 per cent of the population), and 6.4 per cent are at risk (3.9 per cent of the population).

“We have a clear commitment to make gambling fairer and safer and these figures show that this is a significant challenge,” added Miller. “Success will depend upon us, the industry, government and others, all working together with a shared purpose to protect consumers.

“The pace of change to date simply hasn’t been fast enough – more needs to be done to address problem gambling.”
