UK Survey: online betting increase in lockdown
UK survey reveals many frequent online gamblers are betting more during the Covid-19 lockdown.
UK.- The first significant survey since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic has found that more than a third of people who regularly gamble online are betting more than before the lockdown.
The research carried out by Survation found that while infrequent gamblers were betting less, those who gamble at least once a week were betting the same or more than before lockdown.
Among regular online gamblers, 39 per cent said they were betting more, 25 per cent the same, and 34 per cent betting less during confinement.
The betting increase among regular gamblers comes despite a global blackout on sporting events.
The survey of 1,010 people also found that 41 per cent of respondents had signed up for new accounts during the lockdown period, which began on March 23 in the UK.
It also found that one in three thought they were spending too much money on gambling or were developing an addiction.
According to the survey, 40 per cent of regular online gamblers thought the government should make it more difficult to gamble online, while 23 per cent believed it should be easier.
The survey was carried out for Clean Up Gambling, a new pressure group.
The group was formed by former Labour Party communications advisor Matt Zarb-Cousin. The UK Parliament has recently announced that it will review gambling legislation this year.
