UK limits online gambling bonus offers

The Competition and Markets Authority has branded online gambling bonus offers as potentially “unfair” and “misleading”.

UK.- Online gambling operators have suffered a setback as the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced that some bonus offers’ terms are “likely to be unfair, in breach of consumer protection law, and could mislead consumers.” That’s why iGaming companies are facing stricter rules which they have to adapt to before February 28.

According to the CMA, William Hill, Ladbrokes and Playtech have committed to change their bonus strategies as players won’t be required to play multiple times before they can withdraw their own money; restrictions on gameplay must be made clear to players, and operators can’t rely on vague terms to confiscate players’ money; and operators can’t force players to take part in publicity.

UKGC executive director Sarah Gardner celebrated the announcement and said “real progress in making gambling fairer and safer for customers” will be made. She further urged operators to comply with CMA’s demands and to do so in the deadlines outlined.
