Tabcorp sets its eye on US sports betting
The Australian giant is interested in the recently-legalised sports betting industry in the United States.
Australia.- Australia’s gambling giant Tabcorp is reportedly interested in developing its sports betting business in the United States. The company is monitoring the market that was legalised by the US Supreme Court in May.
The US Supreme Court lifted the federal ban on sports betting last month, paving the way for each state to decide whether they’re interested in regulating the gambling modality or not. Australia’s biggest gambling company is now following how the market develops in order to start offering its services in America.
David Attenborough, chief executive of Tabcorp, said on Wednesday that the company is keeping a close watch on legal developments in the country and that Tabcorp could end up moving into the market. Nevertheless, he said that the main concern is to finish the merger with Tatts Group, a US$11billion integration that started late last year.
“Are we going to be rushing in there? No. Will we be going into America eventually? We might well,” he said during an event by the American Chamber of Commerce in Australia. “But it will be at the right time… and right now we are focused on Australia and getting this integration done.”
Attenborough said that they are monitoring all the information that’s flowing out of the US. “We are not creating right now a ‘shall we, shan’t we’, we are in the pure monitoring phase.” Moreover, he said: “It’s going to be a patchwork quilt. There are going to be a number of states that go slow, they think New York is probably going to be the biggest market in the short term.”
