Swedish gambling revenue sees modest growth in Q3
Online casino revenue continues to climb while lottery and land-based slots sales fell year.on-year.
Sweden.- The Swedish gambling regulator Spelinspektionen has reported market figures for the third quarter of the year. The data shows a 0.5 per cent increase in revenue to SEK6.71bn (€613m). The slight uptick was fueled by continued expansion in the igaming sector while lottery and land-based slots revenue fell year-on-year.
Online gambling revenue was SEK4.51bn, a rise of 3.5 per cent compared to the same period last year. Within that Online sports betting revenue also grew despite the presence of Euro 2024 and the Paris 2024 Olympics in Q3 of 2024.
However, revenue from Svenska Spel’s state lottery and slot machines fell 7.2 per cent year-on-year to SEK1.26 billion. Other lotteries for public benefit saw a 0.5 per cent rise to SEK822m while bingo revenue was flat at SEK48m. Commercial land-based gaming, such as restaurant casinos, generated SEK67m, up 3.1 per cent from last year, while there was no land-based casino revenue as this was the first full quarter since Svenska Spel closed the last Casino Cosmopol in April.
On a sequential basis, revenue for the three months ending September was 4.4 per cent lower than the SEK7.02bn seen in the second quarter of this year.
The figures come as Sweden prepares for the introduction of a fuller ban on gambling on credit from April 2026. Meanwhile, Spelinspektionen has announced supervisory measures at Svenska Spel’s gaming halls. The regulator said it would inspect all of the state-controlled operator’s land-based gaming venues to check the placement of slot machines.
Svenska Spel’s net gaming revenue was SEK1.87bn (€199.4m) for the three months ending September 30, a 7 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2024. The growth was primarily driven by the Tur lottery and Sport & Casino divisions, which more than compensated for a drop in the Vegas gaming machine segment and the closure of the last Casino Cosmopol land-based casino.
