Sports betting pushes Denmark’s growth

Revenue in the gambling market rose 11.5% during the second quarter, fueled by sports betting and the FIFA World Cup.

Denmark.- The FIFA World Cup pushed gambling markets all across the globe and Denmark wasn’t the exception. The Danish industry grew by 11.5% during the second quarter, fueled by the sports betting segment, specially thanks to the first half of football’s top tournament, which powered players’ interest.

According to Denmark’s gambling regulator Spillemyndigheden, both sports betting and the opening-up of betting on horse racing to all licensed operators were the main drivers of the period’s €218.5 million GGR. Sports betting posted nearly €87 million during the three months to June 30 and grew 24.1% year-on-year, thanks to a 6.2% stakes increase thanks to the FIFA World Cup.

The report showed that 48.7% of the total revenue came through mobile platforms, while land-based bookmakers were second at 33.6% and desktop sites posted the other 17.6%.

Furthermore, online casino saw GGR increase by 17.4% from last year’s second quarter to €72 million. Slots accounted for 61.6% of total casino revenue in the period, single player roulette was the second main contributor with a 15.7% market share, and blackjack, which generated 11.7% came in third.

Gaming machines dropped 0.9% year-on-year, while land-based casinos were also 4% down from 2Q17.
