Southland casino expansion to bring more jobs

The US$250 million expansion could bring 1,500 construction jobs and 400 more permanent jobs.

US.- Arkansas gently legalised the casino industry, and with the modernisation of its offering, it also approved a US$250 million expansion for Southland Casino Racing. The construction of the expansion project started on Friday, and it is expected that it will bring thousands of new jobs to Arkansas.

The Southland expansion includes a new casino complex with a 20-story hotel with 300 rooms. The West Memphis project will likely be ready by 2021. West Memphis Mayor Marco McClendon said that the 1,500 construction jobs for the Southland expansion will help the city’s economy. Another 400 permanent jobs will be created for the Southland casino complex and hotel after the expansion.

“I think when we’re starting to see construction, we’ll become hopeful of what’s to come in the future,” McClendon said. “So, maybe bring some jobs here as well. I know that whoever works on construction will definitely live here, eat here and make an economic impact for the city.”

The expansion, announced back in January, will also include sports betting areas. The facility will feature 2,400 gambling machines and up to 60 live table games.
