Singapore conducts raids against illegal gambling

The Singaporean police carried out an island-wide operation and arrested 31 people suspected of organising illegal horse-betting activities.

Singapore.- A massive operation in Singapore ended with 31 people arrested for suspected participation in illegal horse-betting activities. The police conducted raids all across the island that required the involvement of officers from the Criminal Investigation Department and the six police land divisions.

King George’s Avenue, Teban Gardens Road, Whampoa Drive, Ang Mo Kio, Eunos and Boon Lay where some of the locations where the authorities struck the illegal operation and arrested the suspects, all aged 45 or older. They also seized a large amount of cash, mobile phones, pagers and several documents such as betting records during the operation.

Singaporean laws are very strict against illegal gambling, with sanctions not only on operators, but also on users. Under the Betting Act, anyone caught betting with a bookmaker can be jailed for up to six months and get severely fined. Meanwhile, those who are proved to be involved with the illegal operation can receive up to a five year jail sentence and an even larger fine.
