Portugal’s Solverde granted online sports betting licence

The casino operator will take online sports bets through its website.

Portugal.- Casino operator Solverde Group has been granted a licence to offer online sports betting in Portugal.

Solverde operates five land-based casinos with four in Portugal including Casino Espinho near Porto and Hotel Algarve Casino. It already holds an online casino licence, offering casino style games at solverde.pt.

The new licence awarded by the Comissão de Jogos do Turismo de Portugal will allow it to take online sports wagers through the same website.

The news comes after the Portuguese regulator Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos (SRIJ) revealed a huge jump in online gambling revenues under Portugal’s Covid-19 lockdown.

In the first half of the year, igaming operators reported a 44.2 per cent increase in revenue year-on-year to €138.9m.

The spike seems to have coincided with the country’s lockdown, with initial signs suggesting that revenue was returning closer to pre-pandemic levels after restrictions were eased in June.

Land-based casinos in Portugal reopened with safety measures in place on June 5.
