Online casinos drive gambling market growth in Denmark

The 2017 annual report revealed that online casinos saw a revenue increase of 15.6 per cent to US$300 million.

Denmark.- Spillemyndigheden, the Danish Gambling Authority (DGA), released its 2017 annual report, in which it was detailed that revenue increased 3.48 per cent to US$1.53 billion. The online casino market reached US$300 million.

The authority revealed that 51.5 per cent of gambling activities took place online, with online casinos leading the charts: their revenue increased 15.6 per cent to US$300 million. On the other hand, land-based casinos decreased their revenue by 1.3 per cent to US$62 million. Sports betting activities (which represents a total market share of 25 per cent) increased 7.4 per cent to US$36 million from 2016 to US$38.7 million in 2017.

Director of the Danish Gaming Authority, Birgitte Sand, talked about the DGA’s strategy for 2019 and said: “In my view, the best way to maintain a well-functioning market in Denmark will be having everyone involved taking responsibility – and preferably beyond what we as a minimum have to do. It can only be for the better if we take on a shared responsibility to ensure gamblers have access to fair gambling products and collaborate on implementation and compliance”.
