North Carolina tribe to offer sports betting
A bill seems ready to advance in the Senate and it would allow the North Carolina tribe to run sports betting operations.
US.- The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians is getting ready to run its own sports betting operations as a legislation is gaining momentum to advance in the state Senate. The North Carolina tribe would be the first to offer sports betting in the state. A committee vote is expected to happen this week.
The gambling expansion bill was discussed last week by the Senate Commerce Committee and tribal leaders said that they support the legislation. Current laws establish that tribes can offer live poker, slot machines and video-style games on tribal lands.
The legislative piece headed to the state Senate would allow pro and college sports betting, as well as off-track betting. Senator Jim Davis, sponsor of the bill, said that this could bring US$14 million in additional annual tribal revenue and US$1 million for state coffers.
