The new law would prohibit platforms using dual-currency payment systems.

US.- Senate Bill 5935 is heading to governor Kathy Hochul for approval after passing through the state Assembly. The proposal had already been passed by the Senate earlier in the month.

The law would prohibit platforms using dual-currency payment systems in the state and would make New York the third US state to pass legislation to prohibit sweepstakes casinos in the past month. In May, Montana became the first to pass legislation explicitly banning online sweepstakes casinos. The new law will enter into effect on October 1. Connecticut has also since passed legislation.

New York attorney general Letitia James and the New York State Gaming Commission recently sent cease-and-desist letters to 26 online sweepstakes casinos, demanding they stop prohibited gambling activity. The online platforms are said to have offered slots, table games, and sports betting using virtual coins that could be exchanged for cash and prizes.
