Spot-the-difference game aims to show British punters how to detect unlicensed gambling sites

The aim is to highlight how illegal platforms often mimic the appearance and features of licensed gambling sites.

UK.- The British gambling industry lobby group the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) has come up with a novel way to try to educate British punters on how to spot unregulated gambling websites. It’s launched an online game called Spot The Black Market.

The game takes the form of an interactive quiz that challenges players to identify which gambling sites are legitimate and which are black market operators. The aim is to highlight how illegal platforms often mimic the appearance and features of licensed sites, making them increasingly difficult for the public to recognise.

The new game forms part of the BGC’s wider efforts to raise awareness of unregulated gambling and to highlight the value of the UK’s regulated gambling market in terms of integrity, transparency and player safety.

A BGC spokesperson said: “This campaign is about exposing the hidden dangers of the black market. These unregulated sites deliberately mimic trusted brands but play by none of the rules that keep people safe. Our new Spot The Black Market game shows just how easily consumers can be deceived, and reinforces the importance of choosing licensed, protected operators.”

The BGC warned that black market operators make no contribution to the UK economy since they pay no tax, while the regulated betting and gaming sector contributes an estimated £6.8bn a year, generating £4bn in taxes and supporting 109,000 jobs nationwide. It also provides essential financial support to many popular sports, the association noted.

The BGC recently published a new DEI statement of principles to coincide with International Women’s Day, stressing the industry’s commitment to creating fair, respectful and inclusive workplaces.
