The legislation will prevent operators from promoting brands on campus and inside athletics facilities.

US.- New Jersey governor Phil Murphy has signed a bill into law that prohibits sportsbook operators from partnering with public universities located within the state. Senate Bill 2155 will prevent operators from promoting their brands on campus and inside athletics facilities.

According to the bill, colleges and universities may not sign a sports wagering partnership that provides a gambling brand or operator with “access to advertise in the institution’s stadiums and other facilities.” The measure extends to digital and broadcast sports content and athletic departments and booster clubs.

The legislation was introduced in April 2024 and passed the Senate in June 2025. It does not prevent institutions from collaborating with sports betting operators as long as no marketing is directed toward students. Universities could partner with operators for academic purposes or experiential learning opportunities.

In New Jersey senator Kristin Corrado’s bill S-3080 aims to prohibit sports wagering licensees in the state from offering or accepting wagers on player-specific proposition bets on collegiate sports.
