New bills propose to ban sweepstakes casinos in Maryland

The Maryland Senate Budget and Tax Committee has prefiled a proposal to ban certain interactive games, while the House Ways and Means Committee has prefiled a companion measure.

US.- The Maryland Senate Budget and Tax Committee has prefiled Senate Bill 112, which proposes to ban certain interactive games, such as online sweepstakes casinos. Meanwhile, the House Ways and Means Committee has prefiled House Bill 295 as a companion measure. These proposals were introduced at the request of the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency as the state opens a new legislative session.

Senate Bill 112 defines an interactive game as an online contest, game, or promotion that utilises multiple payment currency systems, allowing players to exchange the currency for prizes, awards, or cash equivalents. To fall under the ban, the game must also simulate casino-style gaming, including slots, table games, video poker, lottery games, or sports wagering.

The legislation proposes to prohibit any person from promoting or operating these interactive games in Maryland. Convicted violators would face a misdemeanour charge subject to imprisonment for up to three years and a fine ranging between $10,000 and $100,000.

Furthermore, the state’s Lottery and Gaming Control Commission would hold the authority to deny license applications or revoke active licenses for any individual or entity found in violation of these rules.
